Marlys W. Buhr, 93, of Sumner, died Monday, January 22, 2018, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 26, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Larry Trachte officiating. Burial will follow at the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 25, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be given to the family for designation to be made at a later date.
Marlys Wilhelmine, daughter of Henry and Wilhelmine (Stumme) Lobeck was born August 23, 1924, in rural Readlyn. She was baptized on September 14, 1924, at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn, and confirmed in the spring of 1939, also at Zion Lutheran Church. Marlys received her education in the rural Readlyn Schools. On January 28, 1946, she was united in marriage with Herman Buhr at Zion Lutheran Church. The couple farmed for many years east of Sumner, prior to retiring in 1980. Herman’s death occurred on December 6, 1996. Marlys remained in her home until moving to the Hillcrest Home in December of 2012. She was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Marlys enjoyed reading and embroidery (which was a useful skill for helping to patch up her grandchildren’s clothes).
Marlys is survived by her five children, Judith (Michael) Sells of Washington, Donald (Diane) Buhr of Sumner, Harold Buhr of Sumner, Carol (Philip) Uhlenhopp of Sumner, and Barbara (Dari) Shirazi of Iowa City; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Eldora Seegers of Hiawatha; one brother, Henry (Laura Mae) Lobeck, Jr. of Waterloo; and several nieces, nephews, and other family members.
In addition to her parents and husband Herman, she was preceded in death by one son, Dwight in 1974; four brothers, Edmond, Hugo, Wilbert, and Carl; and two sisters, Valeska Buhr and Emma Ladage.
